I may be a little late in reading this since it has already been a movie but what a great book! Cried like a baby through quite a bit of it but couldn't put it down! Normally I don't read books like this one but my DD (15) read it and gave it to me.
Have to admit it was really nice to read a non A related book - even if it was heartbreaking at times!

DDAy #2 8/25/14 - oops - did I forget to mention that it was a 15 month PA/EA? He thought the first version would hurt me less.

Love this book. It was heartbreaking. I haven't seen the movie yet.

Thanks for the recommendation! I will try that one next. After crying my way through Book Thief I had to shift gears - DD gave me The Maze Runner. Hard to put down!

You know...I have The Book Thief. I've had it for years. It's on my bookshelf, but I've never read it! I think it's time I took it off the shelf and actually read it.

This book is amazing, so beautifully written. I love it and cried also! I've read it 3 times....
Only a few books get several reads.
The movie is ok. but it doesn't transfer too well to the big screen I thought. The *story* is told but you don't get the same provocative feeling about the narration, and who is narrating, so much in the movie, and in my opinion that aspect adds such a fascinating layer to the book.
I've tried to be deliberately vague about that, trying not to spoil it for those yet to read.
Some things can't be fixed...

Oh my goodness - the part where he draws the pictures of their friendship. This book is so beautiful in spite of it's setting, or maybe because of its setting. Such a profound story of love and loyalty. I thought the casting was wonderful when I saw the movie.

DD13 saw the movie, then read the book. Both are incredibly well done.

Great book. I saw the movie after and I so wanted to rename my son Rudy, because it was so endearing how she would call out to him "Hudy. Hudy!"
I must be in a WWII kick, as also just finished All the Light We Cannot See and
Sarah's Key
. I would recommend both of those as well.

The way this book was written....the wording...was just unbelievable! I felt like a blind person who was being described things and I could actually SEE where they were in the story! I am an avid reader and never have I ever read anything so descriptive in ways that made it just literally come alive!! It was an amazing literary piece! I found myself going back over re-reading parts and thinking "How do you describe something that way???"

I loved it and the movie. I'd recommend reading the book first. The movie was wonderfully done but agree that something of the narration was lost or couldn't be transferred.
'The Kite Runner' is another favourite and beautifully written book, and 'A Thousand Splendid Suns' also by Khaled Hosseini.
'All the Light We Cannot See' is next on my list.
