I think it must be Friday, the 13th still somewhere... H went to let our pooch out to potty around 2:15AM, and he got sprayed. I could smell it in the house before H even got in to tell me. I grabbed the hydrogen peroxide, baking soda and Dawn and passed them through the door. H is outside with him now rubbing it in his coat for 20 minutes before the first rinse. He's really not going to like it when the cold water from the hose hits him.😤

I did fill up a bucket of lukewarm water to pass outside, but most of the rinsing will have to come from the hose. Thankfully it's still 70° out at 2:45AM. And of course, H has it on him, too, so he'll have to shower and scrub when he comes in.

When mine got sprayed a couple years ago, I let her in the house before I realized what happened. Of course being chased is one of her favorite games.

My girls went to school that morning but came home early because they both smelled like skunk. We bought out all the bottles of skunk cleaner from the three local Petsmarts in town. Our black dog was bleached to a light brown. Every item of clothing in the house had to get cleaned. Every closet got emptied and cleaned out. Every bit of bedding, every drawer, everyTHING in the house smelled like skunk. It took a week to clean the place out to be livable again.

So be glad you didn’t let him in the house!

NOOOOOOOOOOO! So sorry for you guys

We used to live on 30 acres, and this happened to our dogs. I ordered an enzyme based cleaner for the dogs, and it worked with one shampooing. Unbelievable!

Oh so sorry! I can just picture your dog and H out there with the cold water hose with you sending out warm water!

The last time (of several) our old boy chased such a critter, it was nighttime and we were driving the pickup truck out the farm gravel road to go to dinner. He used to love to run to get to the end of the road to "beat us" there (we think he should have been a sled dog). Near the end of his run, a dark shadow crossed his path and of course he had to investigate...yep, black with a white stripe...I could see it happening almost in slow motion and yelled out the truck window "Nooooo!!!"

I think his memory of past skunkings and my yelling may have helped him put the brakes on, because he did suddenly halt and turn away. But not quickly enough. That spray can travel many feet. I was not sure he had been hit, though, and was still 'running on instinct' when I ordered him to jump back in the truck. He jumped in the back and put his muzzle up between the front bucket seats so I could reward him for obeying. When I patted his head, my hand felt....wet...Uh Oh....WHEW. Ordered him back out of the truck, drove back to the house, got the hose and the shampoo....and he was lucky, it only got his muzzle that time.

But the truck stunk for a month, and it didn't even get any spray on it. I forget how long my hand had traces of skunk odor, but it's not easy to wash off, for sure. Of course it was cold out and despite towelling him off, his undercoat felt damp after his cold water bath. We took pity on him and he slept the next 3-4 nights in an unused room with an electric radiator to help him warm up. He reeked for weeks. But love conquers all, right?

I feel for you!

The first time our dogs got skunked, it was the night before we were leaving for a trip to Paris.

WH took them to the vet immediately because there was blood on my female and he wanted to be sure they were not hurt.

He brings them home and bathes them outside with the hose (it was in July). Next morning he bathes them again in the tub with skunk shampoo. Helped but truly they were still a hot mess.

When we were going through airport security, the woman behind us asked who got skunked. You could smell it all over our luggage.

Once we settled in to our hotel room, we left to do some sightseeing, and upon opening the door when we got back, the odor was just permeating the room. Not on our clothes, just the outside of our luggage.

Our current dog was skunked when we were on vacation last year. The poor dogsitter , fortunately our son lives in the area, he had to come and get rid of the skunk, my dog killed it. In the meantime, the dog reeked, our entire house smelled. This was on a Saturday. When I got home on Sunday, I tried to wipe her down with no luck so took her to the groomer the next day for a good bath. The smell took about 8 weeks to really dissipate, every time we pet her, we had to wash our hands.

We have since installed an inner fence perimeter in our yard that is well lit. More difficult for those little critters to squeeze through two fences.

annb, are you saying your luggage made it to France and still smelled? It's a wonder the baggage handlers didn't flag it, right? Maybe the smell was faint outdoors....funny, your dogs were sort of along for the trip.

OMG. Funny stories (although I’m sure they weren’t funny at the time).

I’m sitting in the groomer’s parking lot waiting for his bath, and get this, blueberry facial, to be done. After the 20 minutes of rubbing the homemade mixture in him, then a shampoo, he wasn’t too bad, but I decided to call our groomer today to see if they could give it another go. Funny thing, our groomer back in IL used to offer blueberry facials and I thought it was some sort of ridiculous add on, so I never did it. Come to find out today that the blueberry oxidizes odors, so it’s a real thing!

When H got done scrubbing him down last night, he refused to use the hose - pooch was shivering so bad. Thankfully we have French doors that open onto the patio from our master suite, so I opened the door and H carried him quickly into the bathroom and closed the shower door. Rinses him, then shampoo. I blow dried him while H did his own shower. I’d say today our master suite smells worse than the rest of the house.

Pooch slept so soundly after everything! I think he was fairly traumatized.

Now that I’m out of the house, it’ll be interesting to see how it smells when I go back home. Thankfully he never got inside the house and ran around after the spray.

I did send an apology text to our next door neighbors today for the smell, and she said she woke up just about the time of the spray. But she was very understanding. House on our other side is vacant right now due to renovation.

It’s already 97 degrees here today, so no opening up the house to air it out. We had some painters come by about an hour ago to give us an estimate for painting our exterior, so we were in the backyard. They said they could really smell it. 😤

When my boxer was sprayed a couple years ago, I had a real western cowboy friend tell me to get the cheap vanilla extract, put it on an old cloth and keep wiping. Took about 2 days but it worked!! Good luck 🥰
