We have had a resident ground hog since we moved in. We have seen momma and babies almost every year, wandering around the house. Last week when walking dd out to the bus we found a large trail of blood across the driveway, down the hill and into the field. It started just down from the ground hog den. There were coyote footprints as well.
No sign of momma ground hog since.

I wondered if she had already had her babies. Yesterday we found four. Today 3 more. All so very tiny and very dehydrated. We set up the live trap but didn't need it. Wh just walked around picking them up as they wandered from the main den.

Now they are all rehydrated and cozy in the new den we set up with heat. I gotta call the local rehab centre and hope they can take them.

Adorable! So glad you were able to help them. Seems as if you have some BAD coyotes up there! We have them, especially with new homes being built, taking their 'space' away so they are venturing out to find food. But our coyotes are afraid of people and can be ran away easily. Sounds as if you have persistent coyotes there.

How cute! I've never seen one up close before. I hope the rehab place is able to take them.

Yes we have some really bad coyotes. It's not as if natural prey isn't easy to come by. Lots of small animals around. The farmer put out some cows and a massive bull next door and that's helped keep the coyotes back. They don't stand a chance against that bull.

I heard the rescues are full with raccoon babies but ill call Monday and see if they can take them.

They are all curled up in one big fur ball staying warm. They love the heat mat. We were really worried abiut the runt. It's half the size of the others. But it ate a ton, crawled all over the enclosure and we even saw it drink and poop. Did you know that ground hog dens have a bathroom chamber??? Yep. So they all use the same spot to go potty.

They are also more vocal then I ever thought. Oh and they can climb as well as they dig.

And just when I hoped the day would a really be a good one the outside garden hose began spewing water from behind the fixture against the wall when I was filling the horse and pig water troughs. When I shut off the hose it slowed down only to back up into the basement....its probably a bad seal. I swear this house is cursed!

They're so cute! I'm glad you found them!

Kinda neat about the "bathroom chamber." I wonder if they can be litter trained...

I don't think I've ever seen a ground hog before -- especially a baby one. Down this way we have prairie dogs that look similar. Very cute! Dragn, what are you going to do with the babies? When they are old enough to survive on their own, will they be able to?

I can't see why they couldn't be. They sorta do it naturally, would just have to put a litter box where they are all pooping to get them used to it. Then again they might want to dig in the litter lol

I know wh said he was able to buy a prairie dog to have as a pet when he was younger. Just didnt do it. They are very similar. I think our ground hogs also known as whistle pigs or wood chucks, are larger.

There's a few wildlife rehab centers in the area so I'm going to see if they will take them. Hopefully they do. Not sure what we will do if they don't. The larger babies could probably fend for themselves although they didnt have mom around long enough to "show them the ropes" when it comes to predators. Heck the smaller ones didn't run from Wh at all. They curled up in his shirt.

If the rescues I call can't physically take them hopefully thry can direct me to someone who can or give me instructions on how to introduce them back outside.

Lol laugh

I wish. They seem to be too clean for that. I want to take a photo of the runt in my hand so you can see just how tiny he/she is but I haven't been able to get one yet. Hard to hold and take a picture at the same time when all it wants to do is snuggle.

I'm glad you found them and sorry for the mama.

I laughed at the prairie dog reference. I lived 8 years in Calgary and gophers (prairie dogs) were rampant there. I have a literal long running feud with my husband about gophers vs. groundhogs. Every single freaking time he sees a groundhog here in Ontario waddling their fat butt across the road he says "gopher." I say "groundhog." Drives me nuts for some reason...they aren't gophers!! grin
