My aspie 13 year old who reads at a college level but can't handle college level topics really loved the Ranger's Apprentice and Vampirates series.

If he is university bound, get him used to reading outside a genre. It is not too early to start thinking about the SAT. Look at the accelerated reading list from the most rigorous high school in your area. My son actually enjoyed some of the selections and it put him ahead when it came time for testing. There was also a list we found somewhere of the top books to read before you get to college.

My 13-year old discovered a book in the 'Wheel of Time' series this summer and has become addicted to them. I see others have found them too! And then, of course, there is The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. I don't know how many times my son has read those.
I also second the Ranger's Apprentice series. So fun!

How about Lois Lowry's trilogy: The Giver, The Messenger, and Gathering Blue? Accessible reading but great themes, forcing one to seriously consider societal boundaries/utopian ideals.
