I've been really lucky lately in the books I've picked up at the library, and I want to share some of the titles.

Corelli's Mandolin - Louis De Bernieres

The Good Earth - Pearl Buck

Sons - Pearl Buck

House Divided - Pearl Buck (These 3 form a trilogy)

All Men Are Brothers - Pearl Buck

Six Four - Hideo Yokoyama

Ghost Bride - Yangsze Choo

Night Tiger - Yangsze Choo

Concubinage is a small-ish part of The Good Earth trilogy, so it may be triggering for LTA survivors. Illicit sex, but not adultery IIRC, is in Night Tiger.

I'm also reading Faulkner's The Sound and the Fury, so I deserve a break.

I love Pearl Buck's writings. The Good Earth is one of the best books ever written.

Pearl Buck was the daughter of US missionaries to China. She grew up bi-lingual, came back to the US for college, married an economist who specialized in China (and who compiled a brilliant survey of land utilization in China), and wrote novels about China.

Later she involved herself in various civil rights struggles and in helping children of Chinese, Korean, and Vietnamese women who got pregnant by US military men.

The 3 novels I listed are descriptions of a patriarch and his family China.

All Men Are Brothers is a translation of an early Chinese novel of robbers fighting the Chinese officials which dizzying fighting skills.

Six Four is both a mystery and bureaucratic infighting.

Choo's novel are about domestic struggles within a context of fantasy.

Corelli's Mandolin, I can't describe. In a sense it's a war story, but it's much more than that.

I reread The Good Earth yearly. So good. Should be required reading for the engaged. The grass isn't greener type of thing.

I'm reading "Geek Love" by Katherine Dunn right now. It's about family relationships among professional circus freaks. Makes a lot of sense to me. Don't know why that would be...
