Who else is dealing with this crazy smoke from the wildfires?

I'm in BC and it hasn't hit too hard yet (compared to elsewhere) though I'm sure the smoke will roll in any day now. It's only a matter of time though, as the climate get warmer BC gets hit pretty bad EVERY summer these days (and earlier and earlier in the summer too). We have had so little rain this past spring, the mountains are normally still covered in snow by this point and its pretty sparse already. This year is supposed to be the worst year ever. I imagine this is the year that the rest of Canada experiences what we do EVERY year. Honestly, I'm a bit nervous. I think resources are going to be stretched incredibly thin.

Oh we have it bad where I am. Walk outside and all we smell is smoke.

The forecast for the week was sunny skies but it's all hazy.

The kids aren't even allowed outside at school today.

Yesterday the school called me because Little M couldn't find her puffer. She wasn't having an asthma attack thankfully, they just wouldn't allow her outside without it. She had taken it out to use it at home and i didn't make sure she put it back. She found it last night.

It's scary how close the fires are. Not evacuate close yet but still way to close for comfort.

That sounds awful. I remember a few summers ago when the smoke was so thick that the sky was orange all the time and your throat would hurt and your eyes would burn if you spent more than 30 seconds outside. It felt absolutely apocalyptical.

I keep hearing how bad it is on the East Coast (U.S.), but when I check the air quality in Boston, it doesn't seem that horrible. I know people in NYC can't see the skyline from across the Hudson River.

This is really scary that it's this bad in early June. But here in SoCal, I don't think we've seen the 70s or sun in weeks. May Gray and June Gloom. Since we tend to be one of the epicenters of wildfires, it's so strange to hear about it being so bad in other parts of the continent and yet here we are still wearing long pants and long sleeves.

People about an hour north of us said their smoke alarms were going off even with their windows closed.

Where I live it smells like a camp fire outside. If you stay out for more than a couple of minutes your eyes start to burn. There is a thick haze covering the mountains.

I can't imagine living near the fires.

I'm smack dab in the middle of America and it is effecting us, skies are milky, and due to no pressure systems moving through, it won't clear out until the end of the weekend.
I feel bad for the people that are dealing w/ the smoke, it can be awful. It is amazing how far smoke can hang in the air. I remember a few years ago there were wildfires in Mexico and we too had smoke here, then we could smell it, not just milky skies.
I guess this is a good use for all the left over Covid masks to purify the air a bit.

we have red sunrise suns here (can look directly at it w/o hurting the eyes) that are red until 9:30am. It's really unusual.

On LinkedIn I saw an article about South African firefighters coming to help. It is really encouraging to see the best come out in people during awful times like this. Imagine travelling exactly halfway across the world from your families and putting yourself in danger for a people you don't even know. Really inspiring.

My great niece is in New York and her for one month, and she let us know today that all of her group are wearing Covid masks.

And the same is true for my sister who is vacationing in Pennsylvania.

Yesterday it looked like a storm was coming it was so cloudy. You could smell the smoke. Luckily we had a thunderstorm roll in and it cleaned up the air somewhat.
Today it's almost as bad but they're predicting rain again.
Maybe it will help.

I have a lot of family in New York City but I live a few hours south of there. I’m currently at the beach in the mid Atlantic coast and when I took the dog out yesterday morning there was a red sun at dawn and I was like… what the heck?? It’s been hazy here for sure but not as bad as New York where the photos people are sending me it looks like sepia. So weird and unsettling!! It’s been hazy here yesterday and today. Before I knew what it was yesterday I kept thinking it would burn off… kind of ironic.

I live in NJ just across the river from NYC, and today has been horrible.

The sky was actually a dark orange around noon. Dark in the house, dark outside. So dark that my outside sensor lights went on for a few hours. Our air quality index reached 377 today, code red and extremely toxic.

Reports are we are experiencing the worst air quality in history, the smoke is thick and it's hard to breathe and it felt like it was burning my eyes.

My smoke alarm went off for a second this morning even with the windows closed scaring my dog to death.

Just a few hours ago we were able to see the sun through the smoke, but now the sky is one big dark shade of greyish orange again.

I can't imagine what it's like near the fires.

I am in Long Island NY but it reached us yesterday. My eyes were burning while I was inside my house and the skies are orange. I flew into NYC Tuesday night and we could smell it in the air. Hubby worked in Manhattan yesterday and said he could barely breathe even with the mask on.

I am in Northern Ontario near the Quebec border and it isn't good. Smells like a bonfire and everyone has a low grade sore throat. Hazy, can't see across the lake either which is unusual.

Could be worse.

We are under a special air quality alert here today. It's cleared up a bit but this morning the haze was so bad I could barely see across the road.

It smells smokey.

Little M has had a cough ever since the first bad day here because of the fires. It seemed to get better then came back with a vengeance. Between that and her screaming with nightmares neither of us slept last night.

If it's like this tomorrow, the kids won't be allowed outside at school.

Does anyone thing having little m wear a mask while out would be helpful?

Yes, K95 or N95 masks will help.. When we went through this a few years ago in Northern California, masks mad a big difference. Smoke has particulates in it, and those are what irritate the lungs. Masks definitely help. There are also jury-rigged filters people make using furnace filters and a house fan that can help pull some of that out of the air in your house (windows kept closed, obviously).

BTW, those same particulates are what make for the stunning sunsets/sunrises you see during the fires.
