Very sad today. For those not familiar with Jasper National Park in the Canadian Rockies it is one of the most beautiful, breathtaking areas in Canada. We have been going there since the 1960s. It is the place my daughter and I go to every year to rejuvenate our spirits and our minds. Sadly a huge wildfire has devastated the town and thousands of hectares of mountain forests. Much of the 100+ year old town is gone, so much history and peoples homes and livelihoods gone. They say up to half the 1900 structures are gone. Praying for those who have lost everything, and mourning a great loss.

The images of Jasper are heartbreaking. (And Chico in California). Devastating wildfires.

We went through that here in 2017 and 2019 (I lost my home in 2017), but as pretty as it is here, it’s not Jasper-level gorgeous.
If it helps, our forests are slowing coming back- nature finds a way.

I had the privilege to visit Jasper National Park seven years ago when we also went to Banff National Park. The Canadian Rockies are stunning to say the least, and what I particularly enjoyed about Jasper is that it is much less commercial than Banff. Not everyone makes the effort to drive further up to Jasper. The year we were there, BC was dealing with wildfires near the BC/Alberta border, too, and one of the trail systems we wanted to hike out of Banff NP eventually leads to BC, so they closed that trail system. That was the first time we were directly impacted by a wildfire... until a year later when we moved to SoCal.

I have a good friend who was planning on visiting there with her family for the first time next year. When she shared with me that they were planning this trip, I told her to be prepared to change plans last minute if wildfires pop up in the area as it's definitely a concern in the summertime. This is devastating to so many people, other than just the residents... really anyone who has appreciated the beauty of the area.
