I could use some prayers for my ten year old dog. I have a vet appointment this afternoon. He hasn't been acting right, sleeping a lot, shaking at times and not much of an appetite. He may have had a seizure last week but we didn't think too much of it because he very rarely has had them in the past and we were told they are nothing to worry about. He also had an engorged tick on him so that is in the mix.

My normally energetic, very happy, always up for playing little guy looks weak and tired and is not interested in playing. He isn't getting up to great people at the door either.

I have a lot of struggles I am dealing with and my two dogs mean the world to me.

Please pray or send mojo that he has something treatable.

We just got back from the vet.

He test positive for a tick disease.

His platelets are dangerously low, he has a fever and he is anemic.

If he bleeds from anywhere or has sores develop (he has two on his gums) we have to rush him to get a transfusion or he will die.

It could be from the the tick disease or something autoimmune.

Do they think it's primarily a tick-borne disease that causes this crisis or they really don't know?

If I understood correctly the vet is not sure if the tick-borne disease or an autoimmune disease is causing the platelet problem. Usually with a platelet count as low as his he would have not clotted when they drew blood but he did. The vet said be was puzzled by that.

They are going to recheck his bloodwork in a couple of days to see if the medicine is helping.

Paws crossed for his platelets to come up and no seizures from the medicine.

I really hope nothing happens over the holiday. Our regular vet is closing for a couple of days and I don't think the emergency vet is open during the day. We would have over an hour drive to take him somewhere else and he would most likely not survive the drive. I'm so stressed and worried.

zebra, yes of course you're very worried and it's always near either a weekend or a holiday, isn't it? I totally understand.

Can you give him any B 12 chewy vitamins? Or low-dose human B vitamin chewies? When our old dog had neurological issues a veterinary neurologist recommended B complex 100 mg or lower, Beta-Carotene, CoQ10 100 and low-dose Vitamin E, which we got at the local big box pharmacy. Seemed to help him.

Re the low platelet count - several years ago when I took our dog to a new vet after we moved, they did some blood work and I got a worried phone call from the vet saying that our dog had a low platelet count. She was so concerned that she consulted with a veterinary internist who visits their office. A couple of days later she called back to say everything was OK - our breed is known for having low platelets, but the platelets they do have, are large. We have since confirmed this with other vets along the way. Our dog has never had a problem with clotting after blood draws, either. But this initial vet wasn't aware of our breed having this issue.

Of course, this doesn't explain the other symptoms your pooch is experiencing, but low platelets alone isn't always necessarily a problem. Hope this alleviates a tiny bit of your worrying.

Superesse, what appeared to be neurological symptoms are from his platelets being so low and possibly the tick-borne illness (Anaplasmosis).

Yes, things always happen on weekend and holidays! I live in a rural area so there are often gaps in coverage. There are days when our vet closes at 5 and the emergency vet doesn't open until 7.

Number4, thanks for the information. I checked his breed and his was not noted for having low platelets but that was a good thought. His is extremely low anyway. Normal range is 175-500 and his is 29.

We are not letting him out of our sight.

I am so so very sorry to hear about your puppy dog feeling badly. I’ve had some recent experience with doggy seizures, and it ca be really scary.

Zeb I am so sorry to see this.

I can tell you my MIL had a Westie that had this. She was pretty low and not herself for about 3 mos and then she slowly recovered and led a great life. She lived to be an old lady too she was about a yr old when she contracted it.
They made her rest, not play with the other dogs and I believe she even had a couple injections to help her bodys bone marrow kick back into action.

He had an appointment last night with our favorite vet. His platelets were back up to close to normal but his anemia is a little worse. She said that was not unexpected. He also lost some weight.

She THINKS this is due to the tick borne illness as opposed to an autoimmune illness or something worse.

He had another possible complication this morning that the vet told us is probably ok but to keep our eye on it.

Overall he is eating better, no fever and moving around more.

I've had 2 dogs who suffered from TBD. Both of them did well treating with doxycycline (we'd usually do 4 weeks of doxy) and my vet would give steroids as well.

My greyhound would usually have a flair-up every year or so, usually after something stressful. My other dog only had a few flair-ups in her life.

I hope your dog continues to improve.
